PROMOTING A CULTURE OF READING
The culture of reading at Dodgen has always been robust, but we targeted student interests in our strategies to focus on the student experience, not just the collection itself. Because students have voice and input into the services we offer, their engagement with our space and our services have skyrocketed!

PROMOTING A CULTURE OF INQUIRY, CREATIVITY, & INNOVATION
Our student-led STEM night developed STEM-based stations themed around Minecraft. This team led participants through a math-based Flipgrid-One Note scavenger hunt "app smash."
|
This STEM Night team not only developed stations but designed and created Minecraft-based decorations like this Ender Dragon in our Dodgen Makerspace!
|
Mornings in the Makerspace are always busy! Our Tuesday Maker Club uses challenges like this Tiny House build to promote creative problem-solving and collaboration.

RESEARCH INSTRUCTION
COLLABORATION TOWARDS SCHOOL PROGRAM GOALS
- STEM Certification Support. The librarian served on the STEM Certification Teacher Panel and was embedded into the planning of the 7th grade STEM PBL. For 2022-23, we support STEM through refining the research process for developing background knowledge and for developing new solutions to the problem they've chosen.
- Our expansion of the Makerspace into the Maker Club and free-range making emphasizes the use of the Engineering Design Process (EDP) for students in their personal projects, especially as regards designing items to solve problems.
- Our two Student-Developed and Student-Led STEM nights in November of 2021 and 2022 proved very successful in creating a fun themed exploration into STEM for our entire community. Our 2021 Minecraft STEM Night had almost 100 visitors, and our 2022 Back to the 80s STEM Night boasted almost 150 visitors!
CLASS/STUDENT SUPPORT FOR SHORT & LONG TERM ASSIGNMENTS
Curricular support in the Dodgen Library Learning Commons doesn't just revolve around research; it also involves reinforcing concepts learned in the regular classroom. For example, to support 6th grade ELA, students collaborated on each other's first line short story that gave the initiating event (including setting, character, and genre) using sensory details determined by a spin of the wheel.
INDIVIDUAL AND SMALL GROUP TECHNOLOGY PRODUCTION SUPPORT
- Podcast Recordings and Debate Rehearsals. Students in all grades use the library to rehearse using the PowerPoint Rehearse with Coach feature and to record and edit their debates, Podcasts, and other oral presentations using PPT or Flip.
- Students design infographics, posters and other visual projects in PowerPoint, Adobe, or Canva and have the option to print in color or make a poster-sized print for exemplary work.
- Students design 3D elements for their projects using TinkerCad and print them on our 3D printer to amplify class projects.
- Students in the High School Credit Visual Arts class have support for their digital portfolios using Adobe as a way to reflect on their design process.
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING
POINT-OF-NEED LAPTOP SUPPORT
The Library Learning Commons has created point-of-need videos for technology and research support for student Learning Everywhere devices and has pinned them on our CTLS Class Board as well as our blog so that students have those tips when they need them.
